What is Yasmin?

Yasmin is a combination birth control pill that combines two female sex hormones: ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, and drespirenone, a progestin. This product is used to prevent pregnancy. It is also used to make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, and decrease the risk of ovarian cysts.

Yasmin does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhoea.

How does Yasmin work?

Yasmin works mainly by preventing the release of an egg during your menstrual cycle. It makes the vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent the sperm from reaching an egg and prevent fertilization from occurring. It also changes the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg, which if it does not attach to the uterus will pass out of the body.

What are the benefits of using Yasmin?

Following are the benefits of using Yasmin:

  • It prevents the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle.
  • It makes the vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent the sperm from reaching an egg, which effectively prevents conception from occurring.
  • It changes the lining of the uterus to make it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach.

Take one active pill daily for 21 days, followed by 7 days of no-pill days. Start the next pill pack the next day after taking the last of the inactive pills or after 7 days of no-pill days.

Nausea, headache, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, weight change, or swelling of the ankles or feet are the common side effects of Yasmin tablets. Vaginal bleeding between periods or missed periods may occur, especially on the first few months of using the pills. If you missed your periods two months in a row or if you did not use the pill properly, arrange with your doctor a pregnancy test.

Yasmin may raise your blood pressure. Regularly check your blood pressure while taking this medication and tell your doctor if the results are high.
